Synopsis

Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she's used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family's detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor "Mad" Rogan.

Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada's "talent." But there's no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice . . .

Review

Sometimes I wonder if it would be possible for me to ever not love an Ilona Andrews book. Because every time I pick one up, it satisfies me like nothing else can. Kate Daniels is hands down my favorite heroine, but I’ve got to tell you, Nevada Baylor is right on her heels. Like Kate, she’s strong, funny, loyal, and powerful, with an uber-strong and sexy hero to help heat up the page. But Nevada is definitely her own character and even though this book inspires Kate-level love, it does it on its own merits.

This second book in the Hidden Legacy series delves deeper into the big conspiracy to essentially destroy the current House system and rebuild it with the conspirators basically running the world. The jumping off point, the investigation that gets Nevada’s foot in the door, focuses on Cornelius, one of the small side characters in Burn for Me. Someone has murdered his wife along with a handful of her co-workers, and the House they worked for is sweeping the whole thing under the rug. Cornelius will do anything to find her killer, including paying Nevada to do it.

Thankfully (for me!) Mad Rogan has a shared interest in the case. Some of his people were also killed in the same attack. So he joins forces with Nevada to get answers. And man, do the sparks between them fly.

I loved everything about this book. I’ve already covered the heroine a little, but Nevada is only part of it. Mad Rogan is one heck of a hero. He’s crazy-powerful, but so damaged. The world defines him by his terrible abilities, but Nevada sees the man. He may never be whole again, but with her he’s not just a monster. Some of the best parts of the book for me were in the moments that showed how deep his feelings could actually run. Not just for Nevada, but everyone he considered his.

Like the first book in the series, the world building here is great – it’s consistent and easy to understand. I love Nevada’s power and the way she wields it right along with more traditional weapons. Her sister’s gift is pretty awesome too. Speaking of which, the supporting cast of characters is strong; I cared about Nevada’s family and even Augustine. The sexy-times were hot, the romance gave me everything I wanted, and the ending totally satisfied.

After reading.
