Synopsis
My name is Gin, and I kill people.

Can I just say that this book was nothing like I expected? Not that I knew what to expect, except for the fact that I thought the author was going to have a hard time making me relate to or even like an assassin for a heroine.
So how long did it take Jennifer Estep to make me become a fan of Gin? Um… probably less than one chapter. ;) Okay, so about Gin. Not only did I become a fan of Gin, but all the other characters that make up the cast of this book. Gin has had a tough life, choices were taken away from her and she adjusted as needed. When we meet Gin she is on a job, when that is done it looks like she is about to retire after one last job. It is during this job that all hell breaks loose and her life goes to shit fast!!
Seeing the speed with which she recovers and has to do what needs to be done to go on living was interesting. Her life is at such odds, in part of it she is a cold-blooded killer who can make life and death decisions within seconds, the other part of her life is the caring person she hides from most people even her close friends. Her actions are very controversial, but honestly, in the corrupt city of Ashland, what better shit can you think of? Gin has the lives of innocents in the truest part of her heart, and she may be used to casualties, but she as an assassin has a moral code.
Okay, so what I really think about it.
In the corrupt Southern metropolis of Ashland, weather witches mingle with vampires, giants, and dwarves. A mysterious client hires assassin Gin Blanco, known as the Spider, to murder a whistle-blowing financial officer named Gordon Giles. Then the client attempts a double-cross and brutally kills Gin’s mentor. Now Gin, a Stone elemental with a hard-boiled attitude, a closely guarded heart, and a penchant for throwing knives, has to join forces with one of the few honest cops in Ashland, detective Donovan Caine, who hates her for killing his partner. I will admit though that I did spend a fair amount of time being irritated at the popo himself, Donovan Caine. SPOILER ALERT....DONOVAN CAINE IS A FUCKING ASSHOLE! Reading some of his lines sometimes make me stop and wonder....maybe he was dropped as a baby and like, Jennifer Estep just wanted to leave that out so we as readers would be annoyed as fuck at him. If it was, it worked. Here are the facts about Donovan
1. Donovan just couldn't go one minute without that huge stick up his ass
2. He's a huge dipshit who doesn't know crap about shutting the fuck up
3. Donovan lacks something I would like to call ladies and gentleman, getting the fuck over his huge shitass pride and to just bend his principles when shit goes south and lives are endangered.
But if I'm being honest, Donovan's character...I actually somewhat enjoyed reading. Donovan, being a detective, has these inner battles inside of himself that just makes the story that more interesting. Because bitches, we all know that Jennifer Estep wouldn't screw us over with an unaccepting love interest as Gins happily ever after. Yeah...no. Until Donovan grows the fuck up or just decides to shrink his dick, Gin will most likely find some other guy.
Want to find out if Gin's happily ever after is Donovan Caine a.k.a asshole of the year, or is she going to find some hunk of a guy who doesn't have the cursed name Donovan? Or maybe you just want to read the book for the plotline, which is awesome as shit by the way.
